We Have to Love Ourselves
By Sara Herschander
Nayra Berrios was only 18 years old when she first began doing sex work in her hometown of San Juan, Puerto Rico. For Nayra, sex work has always been a job of survival. A last resort, she says, for many trans women facing a chronic lack of opportunities and support. As an organizer at the nonprofit Colectivo Intercultural TRANSgrediendo (CITGny) in Jackson Heights, Queens, she’s helping other trans sex workers find community and protection.
